AtriClip

An AtriClip device is designed to effectively close the left atrial appendage in the heart and prevent the formation of blood clots and reduce the risk of stroke.

The left atrial appendage is a small pouch located in the left atrium of the heart. It can be a site for blood clot formation, particularly in individuals with certain heart conditions such as atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation is an irregular heart rhythm that can cause blood to pool in the left atrium and potentially lead to the formation of blood clots in the left atrial appendage. These clots can be dangerous because they have the potential to dislodge and travel to other parts of the body, causing strokes.

To reduce the risk of stroke in certain patients with atrial fibrillation and a high risk of clot formation, doctors may recommend anticoagulant medications or an AtriClip to close off the left atrial appendage surgically. Patients with an AtriClip are often able to cease their anticoagulant medication one month after the procedure.
